Amish Poor Man’s Steak Recipe
Ingredients:
2 lbs ground beef
1 cup cracker crumbs (or crushed saltine crackers)
1 cup milk
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 tsp salt
½ tsp black pepper
1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
½ cup milk (for sauce)
2 tbsp butter or oil (for frying)
Instructions:
Prepare the Meat Mixture:
In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, cracker crumbs, milk, chopped onion, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined, but don’t overmix.
Form the Patties:
Press the meat mixture into a large rectangle (about 1 inch thick) on a sheet pan. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight to help the mixture firm up.
Cut and Dredge:
Once chilled, cut the mixture into “steak” size squares or rectangles. Optional: Lightly coat each piece with flour for extra crust when frying.
Brown the Steaks:
In a large skillet, heat butter or oil over medium heat. Brown each “steak” on both sides until golden. (No need to cook through completely — they’ll finish in the oven.)
Make the Sauce:
In a bowl, mix the cream of mushroom soup and ½ cup milk until smooth.
Bake:
Place browned patties in a baking dish. Pour the soup mixture evenly over them.
Cover with foil and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 45 minutes.
Remove foil and bake an additional 10–15 minutes if you want a thicker sauce.
Serving Suggestions:
Serve Amish Poor Man’s Steak with mashed potatoes, buttered corn, or green beans. The creamy mushroom gravy goes perfectly over everything!
